Competition is intensifying to host U.S. President Donald Trump at a Korean shipyard during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, scheduled for October 31 to November 1 in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
With Trump confirming his participation in the summit, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hanwha Ocean, along with the cities housing their shipyards, are making concerted efforts to secure a visit from the U.S. president. Trump has expressed a strong interest in revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry through Korean investment and technology.
HD HHI has initiated diplomatic efforts to bring Trump to its shipyard in Ulsan, a port city near Gyeongju. Joo Won-ho, head of HD HHI’s Naval & Special Ships Business Unit, emphasized the strategic location of the shipyard, stating that a visit would showcase the potential contributions of the Korean shipbuilding industry to global marine defense.
The shipbuilder is reportedly enhancing its guesthouse, which includes an observation deck with panoramic views of the shipyard. During a recent visit by the acting U.S. Ambassador to Korea, lawmakers from Ulsan urged him to encourage Trump to visit the facility, highlighting the guesthouse's suitability for a bilateral summit.
DPK Rep. Kim Tae-seon proposed that President Lee Jae Myung hold a summit with Trump at HD HHI’s shipyard, reinforcing the importance of the visit. Earlier this year, an official from the Ulsan Metropolitan Government delivered an invitation to Trump through the U.S. Consulate in Busan, and on September 10, the Ulsan Metropolitan Council unanimously passed a resolution urging Trump to visit the shipyard during the APEC meeting.
Kim Soo-jong, vice chairperson of the council, noted that Trump’s visit could enhance the global reputation of the Korean shipbuilding industry and strengthen the Korea-U.S. alliance.
Meanwhile, Hanwha Ocean has been more cautious in its approach to inviting Trump but has expressed openness to his visit to its shipyard on Geoje Island, South Gyeongsang Province, which is further from Gyeongju than HD HHI’s Ulsan site. Geoje Mayor Byun Gwang-yong recently met with the acting U.S. ambassador to extend the city’s invitation to Trump.
Byun stated that Trump’s visit to Hanwha Ocean would symbolize the strengthening of Korea-U.S. trade relations and alliances, extending beyond shipbuilding and defense collaboration. The mayor also referenced Trump’s previous visit to the Geoje shipyard in 1998, which has contributed to his renewed interest in Korea’s shipbuilding sector.
Additionally, Hanwha Ocean has been proactive in U.S. cooperation through its operation of Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia and its involvement in U.S. naval vessel maintenance, repair, and overhaul projects.

HD 현대중공업은 울산, 경주와 인접한 항만 도시의 조선소로 트럼프 대통령을 초청하기 위한 외교적 노력을 촉구하고 있다.
HD 현대중공업 해양 및 특수 선박 사업부장인 주원호는 금요일 여당인 더불어민주당과 방산업계 관계자 간의 회의에서 "우리 회사는 경주에서 차로 약 한 시간이 걸리는 곳에 위치하고 있다"며 "트럼프 대통령과 다른 지도자들이 HD 현대중공업을 방문하고 우리의 방대한 인프라를 보면 한국 조선 산업이 글로벌 조선 및 해양 방어에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지를 이해할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이 조선소는 최근 조선소의 전경을 볼 수 있는 전망대를 갖춘 게스트하우스를 업그레이드하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다. 지난달 당시 미국 대사관 대행 조셉 윤이 조선소를 방문했을 때, 울산 출신 법조인들은 그에게 트럼프 대통령에게 이 시설을 방문할 것을 권장해 달라고 요청하며 게스트하우스가 양자 정상 회담에 적합하다고 강조했다.
더불어민주당 울산 동구 김태선 의원은 월요일 기자회견에서 "이재명이 대통령이 HD 현대중공업 울산 조선소에서 트럼프 대통령과 정상회담을 하자는 제안을 했다"고 말했다.
올해 초 울산시 관계자가 부산의 미국 영사관을 방문해 당시 영사 놀란 바크하우스를 통해 트럼프 대통령에게 초청장을 전달한 바 있다. 9월 10일 울산광역시의회는 APEC 회의 중 트럼프 대통령에게 HD 현대중공업 조선소를 방문할 것을 촉구하는 결의안을 만장일치로 통과시켰다.
울산시의회 김수종 부의장은 "트럼프의 HD 현대중공업 방문은 한국 조선 산업의 글로벌 명성을 높이고 한미 동맹을 강화할 수 있다"고 말했다.
한화오션은 공식적으로 트럼프 대통령을 초청하는 데 있어 더 신중한 입장을 보이고 있으나, 경남 고쳐에 위치한 조선소 방문을 환영한다고 밝혔다. 이곳은 HD 현대중공업의 울산 조선소보다 경주에서 더 멀다.
지난달 고철시장 시장인 변수광은 조셉 윤 대사 대행과의 만남에서 트럼프 대통령에게 고철시장을 초청하기 위한 도시의 초청을 전했다.
변 시장은 "트럼프 대통령의 한화오션 방문은 조선 및 방산 분야 협력을 넘어 한미 무역 관계와 동맹을 강화하는 상징적 조치가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
이 섬 도시는 트럼프 대통령이 1998년에 고철 조선소를 방문했던 것을 강조했으며, 당시 그는 부동산에서 활동 중이었고 이 시설은 대우중공업에 소속되어 있었다. 그의 한국 조선 산업에 대한 새로운 관심은 이 과거 방문의 결과로 여겨진다.
또한, 한화오션은 필라델피아에서 한화 필리 압조선소 운영 및 미국 해군 작전 유지보수와 수리 프로젝트 참여를 통해 HD 현대중공업보다 미국 협력에서 한 발 앞서 있는 상태이다.
