On Monday, Hong took to social media to express his regret, stating, “I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate expression I used during a pre-show performance that caused discomfort. I take full responsibility for disappointing both the audience and my colleagues.” He further emphasized his commitment to being more cautious with his words and actions in the future.
The controversy stemmed from an ad-lib during the musical “Burn the Witch” on Saturday at Hongik University Daehangno Art Center in Seoul. Hong quoted a Korean proverb, “When a hen crows, the household falls apart,” which implies that misfortune follows when a woman speaks out over a man. This remark sparked significant criticism from female fans.
Hong made his acting debut in the 2019 musical “Excalibur” and has since participated in various productions, including “Black Mary Poppins” and “Clover.” Earlier this year, he gained further recognition in tvN’s “Our Unwritten Seoul,” portraying Kim Tae-yi, a data analyst who added tension to the storyline.
