Korea's head coach has announced plans to utilize the upcoming East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship to evaluate new defensive players. The tournament, which begins Monday, will feature matches against China, Hong Kong, and Japan.
As the EAFF tournament is not part of FIFA's official international match calendar, clubs are not required to release players for this event. Consequently, participating countries are relying predominantly on domestic league players to form their squads. In the 26-man squad selected by the coach, 23 players are drawn from the K League 1.
In the lead-up to the tournament, the coach emphasized the importance of this event as a chance to test new talent, especially with the FIFA World Cup approaching in less than a year. During a press conference on Sunday, he expressed eagerness to experiment with various defensive combinations.
Among the 10 defenders included in the squad, five have no prior experience with the senior national team. The coach stated, "For our defense, I've selected some young players who have a chance to play at the World Cup."

홍의 26인 명단에는 K리그 1 소속의 선수가 23명 포함되어 있다.
홍 감독은 대회를 앞두고 EAFF 이벤트가 FIFA 월드컵이 1년도 채 남지 않은 상황에서 새로운 선수를 시험할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이라고 여러 차례 강조했다.
그는 대회 전 기자 회견에서 수비에서 다양한 조합을 실험할 수 있기를 기대한다고 구체적으로 언급했다.
한국 수비수 10명 중 5명은 A대표팀 경험이 없는 젊은 선수들이다.
홍 감독은 "우리의 수비를 위해 세계 무대에 나설 수 있는 기회를 가진 젊은 선수를 선발했다"고 말했다.
