EUGENE, United States — Kenya's Beatrice Chebet set a new world record in the women's 5,000 metres at the Eugene Diamond League meet, clocking a time of 13 minutes 58.06 seconds. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay, which Chebet broke decisively, sprinting ahead with 200 metres remaining in the race.
Chebet expressed her astonishment upon seeing her record time, which adds to her world 10,000 metres record established in Eugene the previous year. She had previously come close to the record with a time of 14:03.69 in Rome last month. "I'm so happy," Chebet remarked. "After running in Rome, I said I have to prepare for a record... I said that I'm capable of running a world record." She emphasized her intention to come to Eugene specifically to attempt the record.
Throughout the race, Tsegay and Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich maintained pace with Chebet until the final sprint.
