Korea has dispatched its trade minister and national security adviser to Washington in a diplomatic effort to persuade the Trump administration to extend a pause on "reciprocal" tariffs, as the 90-day grace period is set to expire on July 8.
Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo, who arrived in Washington just one week after his previous trip, held talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Saturday (local time). National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac departed for the U.S. capital on Sunday.
Their visits come amid rising concern in Seoul, as President Trump indicated he had signed letters to 12 countries detailing the tariff levels their exports to the United States would face.
Speaking to reporters ahead of his meeting with Greer, Yeo expressed optimism that the Trump administration may extend the pause. He acknowledged that reaching a full-fledged trade deal within the three days remaining before the deadline would be difficult but did not rule out the possibility of reaching a broad agreement in principle.
Yeo stated, "Even if the U.S. unveils a new reciprocal tariff rate for Korea..."

양측의 방문은 트럼프 대통령이 12개국에 미국의 수출품에 대한 관세 수준을 상세히 적시한 서신을 발송했다고 발언한 것에 따라 서울에서 우려가 커지고 있는 가운데 이루어졌다.
그러나 여 장관은 그리어와의 회의에 앞서 기자들과의 인터뷰에서 트럼프 행정부가 일시 중단을 연장할 가능성에 대해 낙관적인 입장을 표명했다. 그는 마감일 전 3일 만에 본격적인 무역 합의에 도달하는 것은 어려울 것이라고 밝혔지만, 원칙적 차원에서 폭넓은 합의에 도달할 가능성을 배제하지는 않았다.
여 장관은 "미국이 한국에 대한 새로운 상대적 관세율을 발표하더라도..."라고 언급했다.
