A recent report from the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs reveals a growing acceptance of immigrants among Koreans, although this acceptance diminishes significantly when it comes to personal relationships. The report indicates that only 8.4 percent of respondents would consider accepting an immigrant as a spouse or family member.
In a survey of 3,011 individuals, 38.7 percent expressed willingness to accept immigrants as neighbors, while 30.51 percent were open to having them as colleagues. Acceptance rates dropped further for close friendships, with only 18.35 percent indicating openness, and just 8.37 percent willing to accept immigrants into their families. A small minority, 4.07 percent, stated they would not accept immigrants at all.
The findings highlight a significant reluctance to embrace immigrants in more intimate social contexts, despite a general trend toward acceptance in public and professional settings. Notably, younger Koreans aged 19 to 34 showed a higher propensity for forming close friendships with immigrants, with 30.2 percent open to such relationships, surpassing the national average.

“이민자를 어느 정도까지 받아들일 준비가 되어 있습니까?”라는 질문에 대해, 3,011명의 응답자 중 38.7%는 이민자를 이웃으로 받아들이겠다고 답했으며, 이어 직장 동료(30.51%), 친한 친구(18.35%), 가족(8.37%), 전혀 아니라고 응답한 비율은 4.07%였다.
이는 공적이나 직업적 관계를 넘어서서 이민자를 포용하는 데 대한 뚜렷한 주저함이 있음을 보여주며, 친밀한 관계로 갈수록 개방성이 급격히 줄어드는 경향이 나타났다.
19세에서 34세 사이의 젊은 한국인들은 이민자와 친해질 의사가 상대적으로 더 높았으며, 30.2%가 친밀한 친구 관계를 맺는 데 동의했다. 이는 전체 응답 평균을 초과하는 수치이다.
하지만, 이민자를 한국인으로 받아들이겠다고 응답한 비율은 단 8.6%에 그쳤다.
