The dissolution of the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) Korea in December has had a significant impact on its members and the wider Korean studies community. Many were surprised by the closure, as RAS Korea was considered a longstanding institution.
Following the dissolution, various satellite groups have emerged to continue the legacy of RAS Korea. Notable among them are the Youth Dialogue Program and the Korean Literature Club, both of which have maintained monthly meetings.
The Korean Literature Club was established during the winter of 2011-12 as a special interest group of RAS Korea, initiated by scholar Robert Fouser and supported by Brother Anthony of Taizé during his presidency. Over the years, the club has seen various members take on leadership roles, with Jeremy Seligson currently at the helm since August, assisted by scholar Peter Juhl.
According to Juhl, the Korean Literature Club may hold the distinction of being the longest-running public group dedicated to Korean literature in Korea, due to its commitment to openness and focus on translating Korean literature into English. Under Seligson's leadership, the club has evolved its focus from classic works.
지난해 12월에 로얄 아시아티크 소사이어티(RAS) 한국 지부의 해체는 그 회원들과 한국학 커뮤니티뿐만 아니라 영원히 존재할 것이라고 생각했던 많은 이들에게 충격을 주었다.
해체 이후 몇 달 동안, 청소년 대화 프로그램과 한국 문학 클럽 등 일부 위성 그룹이 그 정신을 이어갔으며, 이들은 매달 모임을 계속하고 있다.
한국 문학 클럽은 2011-12 겨울 RAS 한국 지부의 특별 관심 그룹으로 설립되었으며, 그 당시 RAS 한국 지부 회장이었던 형제 안토니와 학자 로버트 파우서의 주도로 시작되었다. 여러 회원들이 리더십을 맡아 왔으며, 지난해 8월 이후로는 한국에 오랫동안 거주해온 제레미 셀릭슨이 이끌고, 학자인 피터 유흘이 도움을 주고 있다.
유흘은 “RAS 한국 문학 클럽은 한국에서 같은 종류의 공개 그룹 중 가장 오래된 것일 수 있다”라고 언급하며, 이 클럽의 개방성과 영어로 번역된 한국 문학에 대한 집중을 강조했다.
셀릭슨의 지도 아래, 이 그룹은 고전 작품에서 현대 한국 문학으로 초점을 이동하고 있다.
