On April 30, 1992, during the second day of rioting in Los Angeles, David Joo, the manager of Western Gun Shop, received an urgent call from Richard Park, a local jewelry store owner, who reported a gunfight occurring nearby. Park requested Joo's assistance, noting that they had already contacted the police.
Upon arriving at the scene, Joo noticed a nearby Los Angeles Police Department vehicle with several officers present, which led him to believe they were safe. However, this assumption proved to be a critical error as the officers fled when the shooting erupted. Shortly thereafter, heavily armed looters approached and opened fire, prompting Joo to return fire in self-defense.
Reflecting on the incident, Joo expressed that it was a frightening experience, stating, "Even though you’re scared, you don’t have much option. You have to fight." He emphasized the frustration felt by the Korean community, as Koreatown experienced significant damage during the riots.
Thirty-three years later, those Korean immigrants who took up arms during the 1992 riots, including Joo, have become emblematic figures in discussions surrounding the events of that tumultuous period.
