The Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) Authority is nearing the completion of an administrative process to designate the southern part of Ganghwa Island as an additional free economic zone, with the goal of enhancing and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the IFEZ.
As of Thursday, the authority announced it will be gathering public opinions on the proposal until June 23. Concurrently, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is scheduled to conduct a third preliminary consultation on Monday to collect expert feedback.
Following these consultations, the IFEZ Authority intends to revise the proposal and submit an official application to the ministry by the end of the month. If the application is approved, the government is anticipated to officially designate southern Ganghwa as part of the IFEZ in the latter half of this year.
Southern Ganghwa is considered a strategic area within the airport economic zone due to its proximity to Incheon International Airport and potential connections with existing IFEZ regions, including Songdo, Yeongjong, and Cheongna. Additionally, the region boasts rich cultural heritage and natural attractions along the West Sea.
인천 자유경제구역청이 강화도 남부 지역을 추가 자유경제구역으로 지정하기 위한 행정 절차의 마지막 단계에 들어섰으며, 이는 IFEZ의 확대 및 장기 지속 가능성 강화를 목표로 하고 있다.
청에 따르면, 제안에 대한 대중 의견 수렴이 6월 23일까지 진행될 예정이다. 한편, 산업통상자원부는 월요일에 전문가 의견 수집을 위한 제3차 사전 협의를 개최할 예정이다.
이 협의 후, IFEZ 청은 제안을 수정하고 이달 말까지 부처에 공식 신청서를 제출할 계획이다. 만약 승인된다면, 정부는 올해 하반기 강화도 남부를 IFEZ의 일부로 공식 지정할 것으로 예상된다.
강화도 남부는 인천국제공항과의 근접성 및 송도, 영종, 청라 등 기존 IFEZ 지역과의 연결 가능성 덕분에 공항 경제 구역 내 전략적 위치로 평가받고 있다. 이 지역은 풍부한 문화 유산과 자연 관광 자원 또한 보유하고 있다.
