General Motors has chosen Hyundai Steel to replace China's Baoshan Iron & Steel as its supplier of automotive steel plates for its Korean plants. This change involves the provision of approximately 100,000 tons of steel annually.
The new supply agreement follows a meeting in September between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun and GM CEO Mary Barra, during which they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore collaboration in several areas. These areas include joint development of internal combustion engines, electric and hybrid vehicles, and the joint sourcing of raw materials such as batteries and steel.
Although Hyundai Steel has stated that the new supply agreement is not directly related to the previously signed MOU, industry observers are monitoring the situation to determine if the two companies will broaden their collaboration beyond steel supply.
A Hyundai Steel official noted that the supply deal is partially a response to GM's efforts to manage supply chain risks. Historically, Hyundai Steel has relied heavily on its affiliates, Hyundai Motor and Kia, for most of its revenue, but it has also been a supplier of automotive steel plates.

현대제철은 이번 계약과 이전 MOU 간의 연관성을 부인했지만, 업계 관계자들은 두 자동차 거 Giants가 강철 외에도 협력을 확대할지 주목하고 있다. 현대제철 관계자는 “이번 공급 계약은 부분적으로 GM의 공급망 위험 관리 노력의 결과”라고 언급했다.
현대제철은 오랜 기간 동안 현대자동차 및 기아에 의존해 대부분의 수익을 올려왔으나, 한국 내에서도 자동차 강판을 공급하고 있다.
