A former high-ranking White House official from the first Trump administration has expressed confidence that the United States and Korea will likely agree to extend the July 8 deadline for ongoing trade discussions. This deadline marks the end of the pause on U.S. "reciprocal" tariffs.
This optimistic outlook follows a meeting between Korea's chief trade negotiator and U.S. officials this week, where discussions focused on seeking exemptions for Korean products from U.S. tariffs.
During a forum co-hosted by The Korea Times and the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney stated, "On the deadline, I think you're absolutely right to think that an extension is possible." He highlighted the significance of Korea's diplomatic efforts, particularly noting Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo's recent weeklong visit to Washington.
Mulvaney pointed out that Yeo's meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and other officials demonstrate a proactive approach. He remarked, "Trump is not looking to penalize anybody," and suggested that the deadline might be extended on a case-by-case basis for countries engaged in negotiations.
