A man in his 40s has been charged with the murder of his wife and two teenage sons after he drove his car into the sea in Jindo, South Jeolla Province. According to police, the man, identified as Ji, 49, confessed that his actions were driven by financial pressures, specifically mounting debt.
Authorities from Gwangju Bukbu Police reported that Ji had incurred approximately 160 million won (around $116,000) in debt. He worked as a rebar foreman, overseeing subcontracted jobs at construction sites, but faced difficulties in managing payments to his workers and handling contracts with construction firms.
During police questioning, Ji admitted to giving his wife and sons sleeping pills prescribed for his wife before deliberately driving into the sea. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 1:12 a.m. on Sunday, when he drove into the waters off Jindo Port with his family members, aged 49, 18, and 16.
Ji managed to escape through the driver’s side window and fled to Gwangju in a vehicle belonging to an acquaintance, who is also facing charges. Both Ji and the acquaintance were arrested on Monday evening.
Earlier that day, local authorities received a report about the incident at 2:22 p.m.

지씨는 운전석 창문을 통해 탈출해 49세의 친구 김씨가 제공한 차량으로 광주로 도주했으나, 둘은 월요일 저녁에 체포되었습니다.
같은 날 오후 2시 22분, 지역 경찰서에 신고가 접수되었습니다.
