Two Chinese men have been arrested for illegally filming a visiting U.S. aircraft carrier and a Korean naval base in Busan, according to police reports on Thursday.
The two men, exchange students at a Busan university aged in their 30s and 40s, allegedly operated a drone near the Korean Fleet Command in southern Busan between March 2023 and June 2024 to illicitly capture footage of the naval base and the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt.
The older individual faces charges of benefiting an enemy by other methods and violating military base laws, as stated by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency. The younger individual is also charged with violating military base laws, while a Chinese woman in her 30s has been booked without detention on the same charges.
On Wednesday, the Busan District Court issued arrest warrants for both men, citing concerns over the potential destruction of evidence and the risk of fleeing. This incident marks the first time a foreigner has been arrested under the charges of benefiting an enemy by other methods and violating military base law, according to police sources.

40대 남성은 적에게 혜택을 주는 방식으로 군사 기지 법을 위반한 혐의로 체포되었으며, 부산지방경찰청에 따르면 30대 남성 또한 군사 기지 법 위반 혐의로 체포되었다. 경찰은 또한 같은 혐의로 30대 중국인 여성 한 명을 구속 없이 조사했다고 전했다.
수요일, 부산지방법원은 증거를 파기하거나 도주할 우려를 이유로 두 남성에 대한 구속 영장을 발부했다. 경찰은 이번 사건이 외국인이 적에게 혜택을 주는 방식으로 군사 기지 법을 위반한 첫 사례라고 덧붙였다.
