Korean stocks experienced a significant increase of over 2 percent late Thursday morning, driven by gains in the chip, heavy machinery, and other blue-chip sectors, despite losses on Wall Street the previous night.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose by 57.2 points, or 2.06 percent, reaching 2,828.04 as of 11:20 a.m. This upward trend followed a 2.66 percent surge on Wednesday, coinciding with the inauguration of the new president, who succeeded the former leader ousted over a failed martial law attempt.
In the U.S., stocks closed mixed, influenced by the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) report indicating that the Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for May fell to 49.9, marking the first drop below the 50-point threshold since June of the previous year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 0.22 percent, while the Nasdaq composite and the S&P 500 saw slight increases of 0.01 percent and 0.32 percent, respectively.
Most large-cap stocks in Korea advanced, with market leader Samsung Electronics increasing by 3.46 percent and chip competitor SK hynix rising by 5.4 percent.
