Unionized bus drivers in the southeastern city of Ulsan have concluded their 19-hour strike after reaching an agreement with bus operators regarding a wage increase plan, officials reported on Sunday.
The bus drivers and six bus companies reached a compromise late Saturday, bringing to an end months of wage negotiations and mediation sessions that began in March. Under the terms of the agreement, drivers will receive a total wage increase of 10.18 percent, which includes the incorporation of regular bonuses into base pay and the provision of three days of paid summer leave, among other benefits.
All bus services resumed by early Sunday. Ulsan lacks a subway system, making buses the sole form of mass public transit in the city. The strike, which began early Saturday due to a lack of progress in wage talks, was the first collective action of its kind since May 2019 and resulted in the suspension of 80 percent of city bus services, significantly inconveniencing commuters in the industrial city.
