Korean stocks experienced a moderation of earlier gains late Tuesday morning as concerns regarding the U.S. credit rating downgrade began to diminish. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) opened 0.74 percent higher and recorded a slight increase of 3.1 points, or 0.12 percent, reaching 2,606.52 as of 11:20 a.m.
Late Friday, Moody's downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating from "Aaa" to "Aa1," citing the government's substantial debt burden. Despite this downgrade, Wall Street closed slightly higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average increasing by 0.32 percent, the S&P 500 rising by 0.09 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite gaining 0.02 percent.
In Seoul, stock performance among major companies was mixed. Samsung Electronics saw a rise of 0.36 percent, while SK hynix increased by 2.06 percent. The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. experienced a notable jump of 3.17 percent, and Hybe, associated with global superstars BTS, rose by 2.41 percent. Conversely, LG Energy Solution, a leading battery manufacturer, declined by 4.63 percent, and defense contractor Hanwha Aerospace fell by 0.12 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,393.2 won against the U.S. dollar.
