Netflix has faced backlash following a significant rate hike of 27.3 percent in South Korea, while competing streaming services have opted to maintain their subscription fees. The company announced on Friday that it is increasing prices for its Standard with Ads and Basic plans, marking its second price adjustment since the Standard and Premium plans were raised in 2021.
The ad-supported plan, previously priced at 5,500 won ($3.93), will now cost 7,000 won per month, reflecting an increase of approximately 27 percent. The Basic plan has seen a 26 percent increase, rising from 9,500 won to 12,000 won. However, as the Basic plan is no longer available for new subscribers, this change will only affect existing users who continue with the plan.
The new pricing took effect for new members immediately, while existing members will notice the updated rates on their next billing cycle. The Standard and Premium plans will retain their current prices, along with the Naver Plus membership, which offers access to Netflix's ad-supported plan for 4,900 won per month. This price increase in Korea is noted to be the third highest among similar adjustments globally.
