Korea has suspended imports of poultry and related products from Brazil following a confirmed outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at a commercial farm in Brazil, according to the agriculture ministry.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that the suspension comes after Brazil reported the HPAI outbreak to the World Organisation for Animal Health. The outbreak was confirmed at a breeder farm in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Effective for shipments departing on or after May 15, imports of Brazilian poultry products, including hatching eggs and day-old chicks, will be halted. Additionally, shipments that departed within 14 days prior to the ban will undergo HPAI testing upon arrival in Korea.
This marks the first detection of HPAI at a commercial poultry farm in Brazil, although the virus was initially reported in wild birds in May 2023. Brazil is the world's largest exporter of chicken.
Currently, there are 37 shipments, totaling 844 tons of Brazilian chicken meat, awaiting quarantine clearance at Korean ports.

브라질산 가금류 제품, 즉 부화용 달걀과 하루 된 병아리를 포함한 수입은 5월 15일 이후 출발하는 선적부터 중단된다. 또한, 수출 금지 이전 14일 이내에 출발한 선적은 도착 시 HPAI 검사를 받아야 한다.
이번 사건은 브라질의 상업 가금류 농장에서 HPAI가 처음으로 발견된 사례이며, HPAI는 2023년 5월에 야생 조류에서 처음 발견된 바 있다. 현재 브라질은 세계 최대의 닭고기 수출국으로, 한국 해안에서 검역 승인을 기다리고 있는 37건의 선적이 있으며, 총 844톤의 브라질산 닭고기가 포함되어 있다.
