Ponce's 18 strikeouts matched the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) record established by Sun Dong-yol of the Haitai Tigers on June 19, 1991. In that game, Sun struck out 18 batters against the Eagles over 13 innings. Notably, Ponce set a new record for the most strikeouts in a nine-inning game, surpassing the prior record of 17 held by his current teammate, Ryu Hyun-jin, who achieved this feat on May 11, 2010, against the LG Twins.
Before this game, Ponce was ranked second in the KBO with 75 strikeouts, just two behind Drew Anderson of the Landers. He began the game by striking out the side in the first inning, followed by two strikeouts in each of the next four innings. He notably struck out the side once more in the sixth inning and went on to record two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
