Han Duck-soo, a former prime minister and presidential candidate for the conservative People Power Party (PPP), publicly apologized on Saturday regarding the recent turmoil concerning the potential merging of his candidacy with that of the party's presidential candidate, Kim Moon-soo.
Han's apology was prompted by strong opposition from some party members to the leadership's attempt to annul the party's primary and replace Kim with Han, following unsuccessful negotiations to unify their campaigns. "I sincerely apologize to the people and party members for the current situation, regardless of the reasons behind it," Han stated during his first press conference after declaring his candidacy earlier that day.
The PPP had selected Kim as its candidate for the June 3 presidential election through primaries last week, but has since pressured him to step aside in favor of Han, who has demonstrated stronger performance in hypothetical matchups against front-runner Lee Jae-myung of the liberal Democratic Party. Following the failed negotiations for a single-ticket campaign, the PPP has faced significant internal dissent.
