Long before soprano Sumi Jo stepped onto the opera stage, her future had already been influenced by her mother's admiration for American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas. Jo shared this insight during a Q&A session following a screening of Pablo Larraín's biopic, "Maria," at Megabox COEX in Gangnam District, Seoul.
Jo recounted her mother's profound experience of hearing Callas on the radio as a teenager, which she described as life-changing. Her mother vowed that if she ever had a child, she would raise her to be an opera singer. This commitment significantly shaped Jo's life from the outset.
According to Jo, her mother played recordings of Callas while she was still in the womb, considering it a form of musical prenatal care. "From the moment I was born, my destiny was already set," Jo stated. By the age of four, she was already studying vocal music, piano, ballet, Korean dance, figure skating, and public speaking, all of which her mother deemed essential for a successful opera career.
The film "Maria," featuring Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie as the legendary soprano, explores Callas' tumultuous career and personal struggles, themes that resonated deeply with Jo.

조는 서울 강남의 메가박스 코엑스에서 파블로 라레인의 전기 영화 "마리아" 상영 후 질의응답 시간에 "어머니는 10대 시절 라디오에서 칼라스를 들으며 깊이 감동받았다고 하셨다"며 "어머니는 만약 아이를 가지게 된다면 그 아이를 오페라 가수로 키우겠다고 다짐하셨다"고 전했다.
이 다짐은 조의 삶을 처음부터 형성했다. 조는 소프라노에 따르면 어머니가 자신이 태어나기 전부터 칼라스의 녹음을 들려주며 음악적 태교를 했다고 한다.
조는 "내가 태어나는 순간부터 운명은 이미 정해졌다"고 언급하며, "4살이 되었을 때부터 성악, 피아노, 발레, 한국 무용, 피겨 스케이팅, 공적 발언 등을 배우기 시작했다. 어머니는 모두가 오페라 무대에 서기 위해 필요하다고 믿으셨다"고 덧붙였다.
