Korea's deputy trade minister is set to visit Washington next week to discuss the evolving U.S. trade policies, particularly the newly announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as confirmed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Deputy Minister of Trade Park Jong-won will engage with officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative on Monday. This visit marks the first official trip by a senior trade official from Korea to the U.S. since the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
During the meeting, Park is anticipated to express Seoul's concerns regarding the U.S. government's recent tariff impositions, especially the 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, which are set to take effect on March 12.
The new tariffs are expected to exacerbate existing challenges faced by Korea's steel industry and could also impact other key sectors, including automobiles and home appliances.
Additionally, Park is likely to coordinate a visit for Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun to the U.S. in the near future. Ahn had previously visited Washington early last month to discuss bilateral economic cooperation with U.S. parliamentary officials.

예정된 회의에서 박 차관은 미국 정부가 최근 다른 국가의 다양한 상품에 부과하기로 한 관세와 특히 3월 12일부터 시행될 모든 철강 및 알루미늄 수입에 대한 25% 관세에 대한 한국의 우려를 전달할 것으로 예상된다.
새로운 미국의 관세는 한국의 이미 존재하는 철강 산업의 도전에 악영향을 미칠 것으로 보이며, 자동차 및 가전제품과 같은 다른 주요 산업에도 영향을 줄 것으로 전망된다.
박 차관은 또한 산업부 장관인 안덕근의 미국 방문을 조속히 준비할 것으로 보인다.
안 장관은 트럼프 대통령 취임 이전인 지난달 초 워싱턴을 방문해 미국 의회 관계자들과 양자 경제 협력에 대해 논의한 바 있다.
