Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke with his Qatari counterpart by phone to seek support for the safe return of South Korean nationals and to ensure stable energy supplies amid ongoing regional tensions linked to Iran.
During the call with Qatar's Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Cho referenced Qatar's decision to suspend LNG production and requested cooperation to maintain stable energy shipments to South Korea.
The Qatari minister urged Seoul to pay attention to and support reports of damage to civilian facilities in Qatar and other Gulf Cooperation Council members following attacks by Iran.
Cho conveyed concern and condolences for civilian and infrastructure damage in Qatar and other Gulf states.
He thanked Qatar for arranging an emergency flight to repatriate South Koreans in the Middle East and expressed hope for continued close coordination on the issue.
A special flight carrying about 300 South Koreans departed Doha and is expected to arrive in Incheon around 12:21 a.m. Tuesday.
Flight disruptions at major airports in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and neighboring countries have left thousands of South Koreans stranded, prompting Seoul to seek safe departure options through government consultations.
About 2,000 South Koreans are currently staying in Qatar, according to the ministry.
Cho also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan by phone to request support for the safe return of South Koreans traveling through Istanbul, as some evacuations are occurring via the city.
Fidan characterized the regional conflict as escalating and reaching a critical point, pledging measures to prevent further escalation in close coordination with involved countries, the ministry said.
