South Korea’s defense minister lodged a protest with U.S. Forces Korea after a brief standoff between U.S. and Chinese fighter jets during a recent air exercise, military sources said on Saturday.
The complaint was conveyed by Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back in a call with Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of the Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea, shortly after the incident was reported on Wednesday, according to sources.
Gen. Jin Young-sung, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also lodged a complaint in a separate call with Gen. Brunson, the sources added.
On Wednesday, U.S. and Chinese fighters conducted a rare standoff over the Yellow Sea during a U.S. Air Force training operation involving about 10 U.S. forces Korea F-16 jets.
The F-16s reportedly operated in an area between the air defense identification zones of the two countries, prompting China to dispatch its own fighters, though no clash occurred.
The U.S. Forces Korea had informed the South Korean military of the training plan but did not provide details or the objectives of the drills, officials said.
