President Lee Jae Myung said the government will expand support for starting new businesses to encourage people with innovative ideas to launch startups and adapt to shifts in the job market driven by artificial intelligence.
Lee addressed concerns in the job market over the deployment of AI-powered robots on production lines, citing the Atlas humanoid robot.
Atlas has drawn attention after the automaker's labor union said it would oppose any plan to mass-produce the robot and deploy it at the company's factories, following its unveiling earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
"How frightening and unsettling would it be to hear that the job you have safely relied on your entire life could be replaced by AI robots that neither eat nor sleep and operate 24 hours a day," Lee said during a startup strategy meeting at Cheong Wa Dae. "I can understand the frustration (of workers), but we have to adapt to this new trend, and one solution lies in starting new businesses."
Lee vowed to expand support for startups and launch new startup incubation programs to create jobs and spur innovation, expressing hope that the initiatives would help shift the nation from an employment-centered approach to one focused on entrepreneurship.
He also said the growing global popularity of Korean culture is creating new business opportunities in areas such as food, cosmetics, plastic surgery, television dramas and K-pop, attracting growing interest from aspiring entrepreneurs.
During the meeting, the ministries announced a new startup incubation initiative, dubbed the "Startup for All Project."
Under the audition-style project, the government will identify and support 5,000 aspiring entrepreneurs nationwide. Of those selected, 1,000 teams will advance to a multistage startup audition process, with about 100 finalists competing in a nationwide startup competition to determine the final winners.

이재명 대통령은 생산라인에 도입되는 AI 기반 로봇으로 인한 고용시장 우려가 커지고 있다며 보스턴 다이나믹스가 개발한 휴머노이드 로봇 Atlas를 거론했다.
Atlas의 주목은 CES에서 공개된 직후 대량 생산 및 공장 배치에 반대하겠다고 밝힌 노동조합의 입장이 알려진 이후 주목받았다.
“일생 동안 안전하게 의지해 온 직업이 AI 로봇에 의해 대체될 수 있다는 소식을 들으면 얼마나 두렵고 불안할지”라고 이재명 대통령은 청와대의 창업 전략 간담회에서 말했다.
“노동자들의 좌절감을 이해할 수 있다”라며 “그러나 우리는 이 새로운 흐름에 적응해야 하며 그 해답 중 하나는 새롭게 창업하는 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
이재명 대통령은 창업 지원을 확대하고 일자리를 창출하며 혁신을 촉진하기 위한 신규 창업 인큐베이션 프로그램을 시작하겠다고 약속했고 이러한 정책이 고용 중심의 접근에서 기업가정신 중심의 접근으로 전환하는 데 기여하기를 기대한다고 밝혔다.
또한 한국 문화의 글로벌 인기가 음식, 화장품, 성형 수술, TV 드라마, K-pop 등 분야에서 새로운 비즈니스 기회를 열고 예비 창업가들의 관심을 끌고 있다고 말했다.
간담회에서 기획재정부와 중소벤처기업부는 ‘Startup for All Project’라는 새 창업 인큐베이션 이니셔티브를 발표했다.
공모형의 오디션 방식으로 진행되는 이 프로젝트에서 정부는 전국에서 5,000명의 예비 창업가를 발굴하고 지원할 계획이며, 선발된 1,000개 팀은 다단계 창업 오디션으로 진출하고 약 100명의 결선 참가팀이 전국 규모의 창업 대회에 참가해 최종 우승자를 가리게 된다.
