Cha Jun-hwan finished second in the men's competition at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Beijing, posting his best free skate of the season and a season-best total of 273.62 points, 0.11 behind the winner Kao Miura of Japan.
Cha produced a season-best 184.73 points in the free skate, the top score among 24 competitors, after opening with an 88.89-point effort in the short program to finish sixth.
Miura, who had also won the event in 2023, tallied a 175.14 in the free skate but had led Cha by nearly 10 points after the short program and held on for his second Four Continents title with 273.73 total.
Sota Yamamoto of Japan finished third with 270.07 points.
The Four Continents championships are open to non-European skaters, with athletes from Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Oceania competing.
Cha, the 2022 Four Continents champion who has also earned silver in 2025 and bronze in 2024, is headed to his third consecutive Winter Olympics in Milan next month. He placed 15th at his Olympic debut in PyeongChang 2018 and finished fifth in Beijing in 2022—the best Olympic performance by a South Korean male figure skater.
The 24-year-old has battled ankle issues this season, caused by boot-fitting difficulties, forcing him to adjust his programs and attempt two quadruple jumps in the free skate instead of three. Sunday’s clean free skate suggests those problems are largely behind him.
Cha opened his program with clean quadruple jumps, the quadruple salchow and the quadruple toe loop, then nailed his triple lutz and triple axel, later earning additional points for a sequence of jumps, a step sequence and spins.
Miura, who had led after the short program, could not land two of his first three quadruple jumps cleanly but still finished with 273.73 points to claim the title over Cha.
With several top contenders absent from the event, including Ilia Malinin and Yuma Kagiyama, questions remain about how this form will translate to Milan. Cha will be joined at the Olympics by Kim Hyun-gyeom, who finished 17th at Four Continents with 208.92 points, and Lee Jae-keun, who scored 211.22 points for 16th place.

차준환은 2022년 Four Continents 챔피언이었고, 2025년 은메달, 2024년 동메달까지 수상 이력이 있다. 그는 다음 달 이탈리아 밀라노에서 열리는 세 번째 연속 올림픽에 출전할 예정이다.
그는 2018년 평창 올림픽에서 남자 싱글 올림픽 데뷔를 15위로 마쳤고, 네 해 뒤인 2022년 베이징 올림픽에서는 5위를 기록해 한국 남자 피겨스케이팅 선수 중 올림픽에서 가장 높은 성적을 남겼다.
24세인 그는 시즌 내내 발목 문제를 겪었고, 맞는 부츠를 찾는 데 어려움을 겪어 프리스케이팅에서 보통 세 차례였던 쿼드 점프를 두 차례로 줄이며 프로그램을 수정했다.
일요일의 깔끔한 프리스케이팅으로 차준환은 쿼드러플 살코프와 쿼드러플 토 루프를 시작으로 안정적으로 점프를 이어갔고, 트리플 루츠와 트리플 악셀, 연계 점프 및 스핀에서 추가 점수를 얻었다.
Miura는 Miura가 남은 경기에서 겹겹이 경쟁을 이어갔지만, 처음 세 차례의 쿼드 점프 중 두 차례를 깔끔하게 실행하지 못했고 최종 합계 273.73점으로 차준환을 제치고 우승을 차지했다.
밀라노에서의 메달 경쟁은 4대륙 대회에 참가한 일부 대형 선수의 부재 여부에 따라 달라질 전망이다. 미국의 일리아 말리닌과 일본의 가키야마 유마의 부재 가능성이 영향을 미칠 수 있다.
차준환과 함께 올림픽에 참가하는 선수로 김현겸은 Four Continents에서 208.92점으로 17위를 기록했고, 이재근은 211.22점으로 16위를 차지했다.
