The Supreme Court has finalized a prison sentence of 3 1/2 years for a former member of the K-pop boy band NCT for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman, legal officials reported on Saturday.
On Friday, the court upheld a lower court's ruling that found the 31-year-old singer and two accomplices guilty of a special quasi-rape charge, dismissing their final appeal. This charge applies when two or more individuals assault a victim who is unable to resist due to unconsciousness or other factors.
In addition to the prison sentence, the three men were ordered to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program and were barred from working at organizations related to children, adolescents, and the disabled.
The three were indicted without detention in March on charges of sexually assaulting a foreign woman in Seoul in June of the previous year. The victim was reportedly a tourist who was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
During the initial trial in July, the Seoul Central District Court ordered the immediate detention of the singer, citing the gravity of the offense. Prosecutors had originally sought a seven-year prison term for him.
The singer debuted in 2016 as a member of NCT, a globally popular act managed by a major K-pop entertainment company. However, his career came to an abrupt halt in August 2024 when police launched an investigation into the allegations. The entertainment company subsequently expelled him from the group, acknowledging the severity of the matter in a public statement.

세 남성은 지난해 6월 서울에서 외국인을 성폭행한 혐의로 3월 구속 없이 기소되었다. 피해자는 사건 당시 intoxicated 상태인 관광객으로 알려졌다.
첫 재판에서 서울중앙지방법원은 범죄의 중대성을 이유로 태일의 즉각적인 구속을 명령했다.
검찰은 원래 가수에게 7년의 징역형을 구형했다.
태일은 2016년 K-pop 강자로 알려진 SM 엔터테인먼트의 관리 아래 NCT의 멤버로 데뷔했다. 그러나 2024년 8월 경찰이 혐의에 대한 조사를 시작하면서 그의 경력은 갑작스럽게 중단되었다.
SM은 그를 그룹에서 즉시 퇴출하며 "문제의 심각성"을 인정하는 성명을 발표했다.
