Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Tom Anderson has joined Hanwha Group, furthering the trend of former U.S. Navy officers taking roles within the company.
Earlier this month, Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace, announced Anderson's appointment as president of U.S. shipbuilding. He previously served as the program executive officer for ships during his 34-year career in the U.S. Navy.
In his new role, Anderson will oversee Hanwha's U.S. shipbuilding programs and shipyard operations, as well as work on developing future programs, infrastructure, and workforce to support growth.
CEO Mike Smith of Hanwha Defense USA expressed enthusiasm about Anderson's extensive naval experience and leadership, highlighting his potential to deliver innovative solutions to industry challenges.
Between 2023 and 2024, Anderson visited Korea multiple times as a U.S. admiral to explore shipbuilding technologies from Hanwha and its competitor HD Hyundai. His experience is expected to aid in securing shipbuilding contracts from the U.S. Navy for Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia.
Michael Coulter, global defense CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, noted that the company's defense strategy aims to evolve into a multidomestic entity, enhancing technology and partnerships in the markets it serves. He welcomed Anderson to the team as they continue to invest in U.S. capacity.
Both Coulter and Smith are also former U.S. Navy officers. Additionally, Roger Camp, who joined Hanwha Defense USA in February as senior director for business development of naval programs, is another ex-U.S. Navy officer within the organization.
Industry officials anticipate that Hanwha will continue to hire more former and current U.S. military officers in light of ongoing U.S. efforts to revitalize its shipbuilding sector through Korean investments.

2023년과 2024년 동안 앤더슨은 미국 제독으로서 한화와 경쟁사인 HD 현대의 최신 조선 기술을 배우기 위해 한국을 자주 방문했다. 그는 지난해 한화 오션 및 HD 현대중공업의 조선소 및 연구개발 시설을 견학했다.
이런 경험을 바탕으로 그는 한화 필리 시선에서 미국 해군의 조선 주문을 확보하는 데 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

또한 한화 방산 USA에 2월에 합류한 해양 프로그램 비즈니스 개발 선임 이사 로저 캠프 역시 한국 대기업에서 일하는 또 다른 퇴역 미국 해군 장교다.
계속되는 미국의 한국 투자를 통한 조선 산업 재활 노력으로 인해, 업계 관계자들은 한화가 추가로 퇴역 및 현역 미군 장교를 고용할 것으로 예상하고 있다.
