Four days after hiring a new manager, the Doosan Bears announced the addition of former rival team skipper Hong Won-ki to their coaching staff on Friday.
Hong will serve as the bench coach alongside new manager Kim Won-hyong. Previously, Hong managed the Kiwoom Heroes from 2021 until July of this year, when he was dismissed as the team struggled in last place in the 10-team league.
At 52 years old, Hong has a history with the Bears, having played for the team from 1999 to 2005 and winning the 2001 Korean Series title. He faced Kim in the 2022 Korean Series, where Kim's SSG Landers emerged victorious in six games, marking Kim's only title as a manager.
"I am overwhelmed to be putting on a Doosan Bears jersey for the first time in 20 years. This is where I enjoyed the best years of my playing career," Hong stated. He expressed eagerness to support Kim in their new collaboration.
The Bears are undergoing significant changes after failing to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2022.
In a separate coaching appointment, the Bears have also hired former All-Star shortstop Son Si-hyun as the quality control coach. Son, 45, spent the first nine years of his 15-year playing career with the Bears and has previously served as a coach and minor league manager for other KBO teams.
"I can't wait to see Bears fans again, but I also feel the weight of responsibility," Son remarked, emphasizing his commitment to enhancing the team's defense and teamwork.
새로운 감독을 고용한 지 4일 만에 두산 베어스가 경쟁 팀의 전 감독을 코칭 스태프에 추가했다.
베어스는 홍원기가 새로운 감독 김원형과 함께 벤치 코치로 일할 것이라고 발표했다. 홍은 2021년부터 올해 7월까지 KBO 리그의 다른 구단인 키움 히어로즈의 감독으로 재직했으며, 리그에서 최하위에 머물면서 경질되었다.
52세의 홍은 2022년 한국 시리즈에서 김 감독과 맞붙었으며, 당시 김 감독은 SSG 랜더스를 이끌고 있었다. 랜더스는 6경기 만에 시리즈를 승리하여 김 감독의 유일한 우승 타이틀을 안겼다.
홍은 1999년부터 2005년까지 베어스 소속으로 활약하며 2001년 한국 시리즈에서 우승을 경험했다.
"20년 만에 두산 베어스 유니폼을 입게 되어 감격스럽습니다. 이곳은 제 선수 경력의 가장 좋은 시절을 보냈던 곳입니다."라고 홍은 말했다. "김 감독과 2022년 한국 시리즈에서 맞대결을 펼쳤고, 이제 우리는 새로운 관계를 시작하게 됩니다. 최선을 다해 그를 도우려고 합니다."
베어스는 2022년 이후 처음으로 포스트시즌 진출에 실패하자 조직 개편을 단행했다.
코치 영입과 관련하여, 베어스는 전 올스타 유격수 손시현을 품질 관리 코치로 채용했다.
45세의 손은 15년의 선수 생활 중 첫 9년을 베어스에서 세련된 수비 유격수로 보냈다. 더불어 그는 이전에 다른 KBO 구단인 NC 다이노스와 랜더스에서 코치 및 마이너 리그 감독으로도 활동한 바 있다.
