The ancient city of Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province is finalizing preparations to host the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting, scheduled for October 31 to November 1.
The summit is expected to gather top leaders and senior officials from 21 member economies, including key figures such as the President of the United States and the President of China, marking their first meeting in more than six years.
Central to the event is the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Center (HICO), which has undergone significant renovations to become a state-of-the-art conference venue. Enhanced features include advanced LED screens, an immersive sound system, and a comprehensive interior overhaul.
Originally a regional convention venue, HICO has been redesigned to facilitate high-level diplomatic engagements. It now includes fully refurbished VIP lounges, bilateral meeting rooms, and simultaneous interpretation facilities, with upgrades to all elevators and escalators for improved accessibility and safety.
"We are on our final steps," stated a member of the APEC Preparation Committee. "All that remains is to lay out the red carpet for our visiting leaders."
Additionally, a newly constructed international media center, valued at 17.2 billion won ($12 million), occupies a two-story, 6,000-square-meter space designed to accommodate over 1,000 journalists, providing a hub for global coverage during the summit.
The official leaders’ banquet is planned at the Lahan Select Gyeongju, a five-star hotel near Bomun Lake, which has a history of hosting significant diplomatic events. The hotel’s grand ballroom can seat up to 2,000 guests, featuring designs that promote tranquility.
Originally intended to be held at a newly built hanok-style hall within the Gyeongju National Museum, the banquet venue was moved to accommodate a larger attendance. The hanok will still host networking events and cultural exchanges for visiting CEOs during the summit.
The surrounding Bomun Tourist Complex has been revitalized, maintaining its status as Korea’s first planned tourism zone, complete with hotels, parks, and cultural spaces integral to the APEC gathering.
Recent renovations at 12 major hotels and resorts in the area have been completed, with costs amounting to billions of won. The Hilton Gyeongju is expected to accommodate the U.S. delegation, while the Chinese delegation will likely stay at a nearby hotel, both under enhanced security measures.
In preparation for the summit, the Expo Grand Park has introduced the new APEC Economic Exhibition Hall, showcasing Korea’s industrial advancements, including innovations in AI and green technology.
Samsung Electronics plans to unveil a foldable tri-fold smartphone at the exhibition, showcasing Korean innovation to global leaders. Senior executives from Nvidia, AWS, and Johnson & Johnson will be present alongside Korean business leaders during the event.
Beyond the summit, initiatives are underway to expand smart tourism infrastructure within the Bomun complex, which includes AI guide kiosks and augmented reality zones, aiming to position Gyeongju as a global MICE destination.
To ensure health and safety during the summit, the organizing committee has collaborated with 24 regional hospitals to finalize a network of emergency teams, with three field clinics staffed by medical volunteers ready to operate within the complex.

원래 경주 국립박물관 내에 새로 건설된 한옥 스타일의 홀에서 만찬이 개최될 예정이었으나, 참석자를 더 많이 수용하기 위해 호텔로 장소를 변경했습니다. 한옥은 방문하는 CEO들을 위한 네트워킹 이벤트와 문화 교류를 진행하는 공간으로 활용될 예정입니다.
