Kim Je-deok advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's recurve individual event at the World Archery Championships held in Gwangju, Jeolla province, on Thursday, while fellow Korean Lee Woo-seok was eliminated in the round of 16.
In the round of 16, Kim defeated Yuki Kawata of Japan with a set score of 7-1, winning the individual sets with scores of 29-25, 29-27, 28-28, and 30-29.
Kim is set to face Tang Chih-Chun of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals later on Thursday.
Lee Woo-seok lost to Matias Grande of Mexico by a score of 6-2, with set scores of 29-28, 27-29, 28-27, and 29-26.
In individual recurve matches, archers shoot three arrows per set, with a maximum possible score of 30 points. A set win earns two points, while a tie awards one point. The first archer to reach six points wins the match.
The quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal match, and gold medal match will also take place on Thursday afternoon.
Kim and Lee had previously secured the men's team gold medal in Gwangju, alongside teammate Kim Woo-jin, on Wednesday. However, Kim Woo-jin, ranked world No. 2 and the 2021 world individual champion, was eliminated in the round of 32 in the individual event.
With Lee's exit, Kim Je-deok remains the only Korean competitor in the men's individual event. At 21 years old, he aims to win his first individual medal at a major international competition, having previously achieved three Olympic gold medals and three world titles in team events.
Additionally, three Korean women—An San, Kang Chae-young, and Lim Si-hyeon—successfully won their early knockout matches and advanced to the round of 16, scheduled for Friday.

김제덕은 목요일 오후에 예정된 8강에서 대만의 탕즈춘과 맞붙게 된다.
반면, 이우석은 16강에서 멕시코의 마티아스 그란데에게 6-2(29-28, 27-29, 28-27, 29-26)로 패했다.
개인 리커브 경기에서는 선수들이 세트당 세 발의 화살을 쏘며 최대 30점까지 획득할 수 있다. 세트를 이기면 2점이 주어지고, 비기면 1점을 얻는다. 먼저 6점을 올린 선수가 승리한다.
8강, 4강, 동메달전 및 금메달전도 오늘 오후에 진행될 예정이다.
김제덕과 이우석은 수요일 함께 김우진과 팀을 이루어 광주에서 남자 팀 금메달을 차지했다.
김우진은 세계 랭킹 2위이자 2021년 세계 개인 챔피언으로, 수요일 개인전 32강에서 탈락했다. 이우석의 탈락으로 남자 부문에선 김제덕만이 남아 있다.
21세인 김제덕은 주요 국제 대회에서 첫 번째 개인 메달을 노리고 있으며, 팀 경기에서만 세 개의 올림픽 금메달과 세 개의 세계 타이틀을 차지한 바 있다.
또한 목요일, 한국 여성 선수인 안산, 강채영, 임시현도 초반 녹아웃 경기에서 승리하여 금요일 16강에 진출했다.
