Hana Bank recently hosted a financial education session for international students in Korea, aimed at enhancing their understanding of the country's banking services, the lender announced on Wednesday.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Seoul Global Center, comes in response to the increasing number of international students in the country. The session was conducted in both Korean and English.
Held at Yonsei University on Friday, Hana officials focused on raising awareness about financial scams that target non-Korean residents, including voice phishing and illegal remittance schemes. Previous sessions were conducted at Korea University and Dongguk University.
During the session, officials also provided guidance on recognizing and avoiding attempts to open accounts in their names for fraudulent transactions.
The program included an overview of basic financial services, such as how to open a Korean bank account, utilize debit cards and ATMs, and install mobile banking applications.
Representatives from Hana Bank noted that many participants found the session beneficial for navigating Korea’s financial system.
“We hope that international students can adapt to life in Korea through financial education and fully pursue their dreams. Hana will continue to provide financial services tailored to the diverse needs of our international customers as a bank specialized in foreign exchange,” a Hana official stated.
According to the Ministry of Education, the number of international students enrolled in Korean universities has increased by over 20 percent in the past year, reaching a record high of more than 253,000 students across universities and graduate schools.
By nationality, students from China represent the largest group, totaling 76,541 (30.2 percent), followed by Vietnam (29.7 percent), Uzbekistan (6.2 percent), and Mongolia (6 percent).

금요일 연세대학교에서 열린 행사에서는 하나은행 관계자들이 비한국 거주자를 대상으로 한 금융 사기, 특히 보이스 피싱과 불법 송금과 같은 문제에 대한 인식을 높였다. 이전 세션은 고려대학교와 동국대학교에서 진행되었다.
관계자들은 또한 사기 거래에 사용될 수 있는 본인 명의로 계좌를 개설하려는 시도를 인식하고 피하는 방법에 대해서도 설명했다.
이 세션에서는 한국 은행 계좌 개설 방법, 체크카드 및 ATM 사용법, 모바일 뱅킹 앱 설치 방법 등을 포함한 기본 금융 서비스에 대한 안내도 제공되었다.
하나은행 관계자는 많은 참가자들이 한국 금융 시스템을 활용하는 데 유익한 세션이었다고 평가했다고 전했다.
“우리는 유학생들이 금융 교육을 통해 한국 생활에 적응하고 꿈을 펼칠 수 있기를 바랍니다. 하나은행은 외환 전문 은행으로서 다양한 국제 고객의 요구에 맞춘 금융 서비스를 계속 제공할 것입니다.”라고 하나 관계자가 말했다.
교육부에 따르면, 한국 대학에 등록된 유학생 수는 지난 1년 동안 20% 이상 증가하여 역사적인 최고치인 253,000명 이상에 달했다.
국적별로는 중국 학생이 76,541명(30.2%)으로 가장 큰 비율을 차지했고, 그 뒤를 베트남(29.7%), 우즈베키스탄(6.2%), 몽골(6%)이 이었다.
