BUSAN — Iranian director Jafar Panahi, whose film “It Was Just an Accident” won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, spoke of his unwavering creative drive despite facing repression in his home country during the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
"I was banned from filmmaking by the government for 20 years. During that time, I stood in front of the camera myself and drew out ideas to make films. That process led to works like 'Taxi,'" Panahi said during a press conference at the Busan Cinema Center on Thursday.
"Ultimately, what I want to say is no one can stop us making films. Filmmakers will always find a way and will surely be able to convey their ideas."
Panahi joined the 30th edition of BIFF to receive this year's Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award, which is given annually to an Asian filmmaker who has made a significant contribution to the development of the film industry and culture in Asia. His latest film “It Was Just an Accident” is also scheduled to be released on Oct. 1 in Korea.
Panahi picked his wife as the driving force behind his ability to continue making films. "I can't do anything but make movies. If I can't make films, my wife might leave me. I have to make movies to keep our marriage going," he said with a smile.
The director added that he feels his best when making a film, but finds it most difficult when he's thinking about his next film.
Panahi also candidly shared the current situation for creators in Iran. "In Iran, if you want to make a film, you have to submit your script to the government department. They censor the script. If you don't want to follow these rules, you'll face many problems and I also have faced the same problems."
Regarding the struggles of the current film industry, he emphasized to young filmmakers that they must put in constant effort. "I didn't have the same benefits or technology that young filmmakers have now. Many possibilities and tools are available now, so I think they can make films in very innovative ways. There is no excuse not to make films," he said.
He also noted that it's important for filmmakers to decide what kind of films to make, differentiating between films that cater to the audience's desires and those that make the audience come to them. "There are two types of films. One type always follows the audience and what they want and tries to make something for them. I think about 95 percent of the global film industry tries to make that type of film," the filmmaker said.
"The other type is a film that the audience seeks out. In this type of film, the filmmaker presents the world from their perspective, sending a message like 'If you want to understand this, you must follow me.' I think both types should exist."

파나히는 목요일 부산영화의전당에서 열린 기자회견에서 “저는 정부에 의해 20년 동안 영화 제작이 금지되었습니다. 그동안 저는 직접 카메라 앞에 서서 영화 아이디어를 이끌어냈습니다. 그 과정에서 ‘택시’ 같은 작품이 나왔습니다.”라고 말했다.
“결국 제가 하고 싶은 말은 아무도 우리를 영화 제작에서 막을 수 없다는 것입니다. 영화 제작자들은 항상 길을 찾고 자신들의 아이디어를 전달할 수 있을 것입니다.”
파나히는 올해 아시아영화제작자상 수상을 위해 제30회 부산국제영화제에 참석했으며, 이 상은 아시아 영화 산업과 문화 발전에 기여한 아시아 영화 제작자에게 매년 수여된다. 그의 최신 영화 “사고였을 뿐”은 오는 10월 1일 한국에서 개봉될 예정이다.
그는 영화 제작을 계속할 수 있는 원동력으로 아내를 선택했다.
“저는 영화 제작 외에는 아무것도 할 수 없습니다. 영화를 만들 수 없다면 아내가 저를 떠날 것입니다. 결혼을 유지하기 위해서는 반드시 영화를 만들어야 합니다.”라고 웃으며 말했다.
파나히는 영화를 만들 때 가장 좋은 기분을 느끼지만, 다음 영화를 생각할 때 가장 힘들다고 덧붙였다.
또한 그는 이란의 창작자들 현재 상황에 대해 솔직하게 공유했다. “이란에서 영화를 만들고 싶다면, 스크립트를 정부 부서에 제출해야 합니다. 그들이 스크립트를 검열합니다. 이러한 규칙을 따르지 않으면 많은 문제에 직면하게 되고 저 역시 같은 문제를 겪었습니다.”
현재 영화 산업의 어려움에 대해 그는 젊은 영화 제작자들에게 지속적인 노력을 해야 한다고 강조했다.
“저는 젊은 영화 제작자들이 지금 누리고 있는 혜택이나 기술이 없었습니다. 지금은 많은 가능성과 도구들이 제공되고 있으므로, 그들은 매우 혁신적인 방법으로 영화를 만들 수 있다고 생각합니다. 영화를 만들지 않을 이유는 없습니다.”라고 말했다.
그는 또한 영화 제작자들이 어떤 영화를 만들 것인지 결정하는 것이 중요하다고 언급하며, 관객의 욕구에 맞춘 영화와 관객이 찾아오는 영화를 구분해야 한다고 강조했다.
“영화에는 두 가지 유형이 있습니다. 한 유형은 항상 관객이 원하는 것을 따르며 그들을 위해 무언가를 만들려 합니다. 저는 전 세계 영화 산업의 약 95%가 그런 유형의 영화를 만들기 위해 애쓴다고 생각합니다.”라고 영화 제작자는 말했다.
“다른 유형은 관객이 찾아오는 영화입니다. 이 유형의 영화에서는 영화 제작자가 자신의 관점에서 세상을 제시하고 ‘이해하고 싶다면 나를 따라와야 한다’는 메시지를 전달합니다. 저는 두 유형 모두 존재해야 한다고 생각합니다.”
