Korea will begin distributing cash handouts to all citizens on July 21 as part of a government initiative aimed at stimulating domestic consumption, officials announced on Saturday.
This decision follows the Cabinet's approval of a 31.8 trillion-won ($23.3 billion) supplementary budget, which was passed by the National Assembly on Friday. The handout program is a central component of the first supplementary budget under the current administration.
Under this plan, all South Korean citizens residing in the country as of June 18 will receive a one-time payment of 150,000 won. The government stated that this broad disbursement is intended to enhance consumer spending nationwide.
In addition to the general handout, targeted assistance will be offered based on income levels. Individuals from near-poverty households and single-parent families will receive 300,000 won, while recipients of the basic living allowance will get 400,000 won.
To promote balanced regional development, residents outside the greater Seoul area, including Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, will receive an extra 30,000 won. Furthermore, those living in 84 designated rural and fishing communities facing population decline will also benefit from additional support.

이번 현금 지급 프로그램은 이재명 정부의 첫 번째 추가 예산의 핵심 요소로, 6월 18일 기준으로 국내에 거주하는 모든 대한민국 시민에게 15만 원의 일회성 지급이 이루어진다.
정부는 이 광범위한 지급이 전국적으로 소비자 지출을 촉진하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다고 밝혔다.
추가적인 맞춤형 지원은 소득 수준에 따라 제공될 예정이다.
근로빈곤 가구와 한부모 가정의 경우 30만 원이 지급되며, 기본생활수급자는 40만 원을 받게 된다.
균형 있는 지역 발전을 위한 정책으로 대서울권(경기도 및 인천 포함) 외 지역 주민은 추가로 3만 원을 지원받는다.
인구 감소를 겪고 있는 84개 지정된 농어촌 지역 주민들은 별도의 지급이 이루어진다.
