Korean customs authorities announced on Thursday the seizure of nearly 34 kilograms of illegal drugs smuggled from the United States, following joint operations with U.S. law enforcement agencies.
A total of 33.9 kilograms of narcotics, including liquid marijuana, methamphetamine, and ketamine, were confiscated during two separate operations. This quantity is sufficient to potentially affect approximately 1.13 million individuals, according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS).
The operations took place in collaboration with U.S. agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, during two timeframes: from April to May 2024 and from June 23 to July 18 of this year.
The KCS reported a significant increase in the volume of marijuana-related drugs, which surged by 258 percent during the latest crackdown. The agency noted that the smuggling of cannabis has been on the rise following its legalization in certain parts of the United States.
Additionally, the KCS highlighted an increasing variety of smuggled drugs, with methamphetamine and ketamine being detected for the first time in this operation. The agency stated its commitment to enhancing international cooperation with key drug-supplying countries.
