Voting for the presidential election commenced at 6 a.m. Tuesday at 14,295 polling stations nationwide. This election follows the Constitutional Court's removal of the former president from office in April, which was triggered by his declaration of martial law last year. According to the law, a presidential election must occur within 60 days of an impeachment ruling.
The newly elected president will take office immediately on Wednesday, bypassing the customary 60-day transition period, with the term set to continue until June 2030. Voting will remain open until 8 p.m. local time.
Once the polls close, ballot boxes at each station will be sealed with tamper-proof stickers and locked to prevent the insertion of additional ballots. Election officials will transport these boxes to counting centers under police escort, with the presence of election observers.
Approximately 30 minutes after the polls close, around 70,000 election workers are scheduled to start counting the ballots at 254 stations across the country. A preliminary understanding of the winning candidate is anticipated to emerge once more than 70 percent of the ballots have been counted.
