The Marine Corps announced on Wednesday that it conducted live-fire drills on islands close to the inter-Korean maritime border in the Yellow Sea for the first time under the new administration. The exercise involved K9 self-propelled howitzers and took place on the islands of Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong, which are situated near the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the de facto boundary between North and South Korea.
During the drills, troops fired approximately 200 rounds into the surrounding waters. The Marine Corps stated, "The Northwest Islands Defense Command will continue to protect national sovereignty and do its best to maintain the operational posture of the troops of northwestern island units."
These drills were conducted as scheduled, despite the new administration's efforts to reduce cross-border tensions. Earlier this month, the military had halted anti-Pyongyang loudspeaker broadcasts along the border as part of these initiatives.
The waters near the NLL have historically been a flashpoint for conflict, with three significant naval skirmishes occurring in 1999, 2002, and 2009. Additionally, in November 2010, North Korea conducted a bombing in the region.

해병대는 성명에서 "북서도서 방어사령부는 국가 주권을 보호하고 북서 섬 부대의 작전 태세를 유지하기 위해 최선을 다할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이번 훈련은 새로운 정부가 국경 간 긴장 완화를 추구하고 있음에도 불구하고 예정대로 실시되었다. 이달 초에는 군이 이러한 노력의 일환으로 국경 내 반북 확성기 방송을 중단했다.
NLL 근처의 해역은 남북 간의 충돌 지점으로, 1999년, 2002년, 2009년 세 차례의 혈전으로 이어진 해전이 발생하였다. 2010년 11월에는 북한이 포격을 가한 사건이 있었다.
