Koreans are set to vote on Tuesday in a presidential election, with 14,295 polling stations opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m., two hours later than typical elections. This election follows the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, which was linked to his declaration of martial law on December 3.
The National Election Commission (NEC) reports approximately 44.39 million eligible voters, including 15.42 million who participated in early voting last Thursday and Friday, and 205,268 who voted overseas. Early voting saw a turnout of 37.4 percent, marking the second-highest participation rate in the nation’s history.
The voter turnout during the 2017 presidential election, also a snap election, was 77.2 percent, while the turnout for the 2022 election was 77.1 percent. Following the closure of polls, ballot counting will commence immediately, with ballot boxes being transported under police escort to 254 designated counting centers across the country.
A joint exit poll result from three major broadcasters is expected to be released shortly after the polls close.
