A recent poll highlights the significant political challenges facing the administration of President Lee Jae-myung, particularly ongoing conflicts with opposition parties and legal issues. Conducted by The Korea Times, the nationwide survey took place on Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the poll, 34 percent of respondents identified clashes with opposition parties as the primary political obstacle for the new administration. Additionally, 28 percent expressed concern regarding the judicial risks associated with the five criminal trials currently involving the president.
The survey, which included 1,000 adult participants, also noted that 20 percent of respondents were worried about potential weakening of institutional checks and balances that support the separation of powers. With Lee’s ruling party holding both the executive branch and a legislative majority, there are fears that proposed judicial reforms, such as increasing the number of Supreme Court justices and possibly delaying Lee’s trials during his presidency, could threaten judicial independence.
