Figure skating star Cha Jun-hwan, 24, has been announced as the first member of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s newly established figure skating team, according to officials on Wednesday.
Cha, who secured a gold medal in the men’s singles event at the 2025 Asian Winter Games held in Harbin, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. He stated that this initiative will provide him with stable support for training in preparation for next year’s Winter Olympics in Italy.
The launch of the figure skating team is part of a broader effort by the city government to nurture young athletes and support competitors in less-publicized sports. Currently, the city operates 26 teams comprising a total of 189 athletes, including those in fencing, sprinting, and women’s soccer.
During this year’s Asian Winter Games in Harbin, athletes representing Seoul achieved notable success, winning two gold medals and three silver medals, which contributed to Korea finishing as the overall runner-up behind China.
Cha expressed his excitement about being the inaugural athlete to join the city’s figure skating team, highlighting the significance of the establishment of a dedicated team for figure skaters in Korea.
