Korea has approved the requests from U.S. space firm SpaceX and Britain's OneWeb to launch their satellite internet services in the country, according to the science ministry on Friday.
The government approved three separate cross-border supply agreements: one between SpaceX and Starlink Korea; a second between Hanwha Systems and OneWeb; and a third between KT Sat and OneWeb, as stated in a press release from the Ministry of Science and ICT.
To support the advancement of its Starlink service, SpaceX has established a local subsidiary named Starlink Korea. The ministry noted that the approval was granted after evaluating three key factors: the potential for stable service provision, the expected impact on the domestic telecommunications market, and consumer protection.
Local frequencies became available for Starlink and OneWeb following a recent revision to the Radio Waves Act. Regarding the launch timeline, the ministry indicated that services could begin as early as June or later in the year.
Starlink is known for offering high-speed, low-latency internet service worldwide through a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Additionally, under Korean law, foreign companies are required to sign a supply agreement with local firms before commencing operations.
한국이 미국 우주 기업 스페이스X와 영국의 원웹이 자국에서 위성 인터넷 서비스를 시작할 수 있도록 요청을 승인했다고 과학기술부가 금요일 발표했다.
정부는 스페이스X와 스타링크 코리아 간의 계약, 한화 시스템과 원웹 간의 계약, KT SAT과 원웹 간의 계약을 포함한 세 가지 교차 국경 공급 계약을 승인했다. 과학기술정보통신부는 보도자료에서 이와 같이 밝혔다.
스페이스X는 스타링크 서비스를 위해 현지 자회사인 스타링크 코리아를 설립했다. 과학기술부는 "승인은 안정적인 서비스 제공 가능성, 국내 통신 시장에 미치는 예상 영향, 소비자 보호라는 세 가지 핵심 요소를 검토한 후 이뤄졌다"고 설명했다.
최근 라디오파법 개정에 따라 스타링크와 원웹은 현지 주파수를 확보하게 됐다. 서비스 시작 시점에 대해 과학기술부는 서비스가 올해 6월 또는 그 이후에 시작될 수 있다고 밝혔다.
스타링크는 저궤도(LEO) 위성 constellations를 통해 전 세계적으로 고속, 저지연 인터넷 서비스를 제공한다.
