A court of appeals has upheld a previous ruling that halts the sports ministry's demand to penalize the country's top football official. Judiciary sources reported on Tuesday that the Seoul High Court dismissed an appeal from the sports ministry aimed at overturning a February 11 ruling by the Seoul Administrative Court.
This ruling had granted a request from the Korea Football Association (KFA) to pause the ministry's efforts to discipline KFA President Chung Mong-gyu. The ministry initiated an extensive investigation last summer following the KFA's controversial hiring of Hong Myung-bo as the new head coach of the men's national team.
In November, the ministry announced the results of its audit, which led to demands for Chung's suspension due to alleged violations of several rules and other irregularities. After the ministry rejected the KFA's appeal of the ruling in January, the football body escalated the matter to court.
The administrative court's decision allowed Chung to maintain his eligibility for the KFA presidential election scheduled for February 26, where he subsequently secured his fourth term in a landslide victory.
