SK Telecom announced on Sunday that nearly 20 million subscribers have enrolled in its USIM Protection Service following a significant data breach. As of Sunday morning, a total of 19.9 million individuals had registered for the service, with 956,000 having already replaced their universal subscriber identity module (USIM) chips.
Additionally, 7.6 million subscribers have scheduled USIM replacements online. The USIM Protection Service is designed to offer the same level of security against illegal financial activities as physically replacing the USIM chip.
The company detected a cyberattack on April 18, which indicated a large-scale leak of customer USIM data. In response to this incident, SK Telecom provided free USIM replacements to all 25 million subscribers, including 2 million budget phone users, to mitigate potential risks.
Furthermore, SK Telecom has encouraged users to register for its USIM Protection Service. To enhance security measures, the company will temporarily halt new subscriber sign-ups at its 2,600 retail stores nationwide, starting Monday.

SK텔레콤은 USIM 보호 서비스가 불법 금융 활동에 대한 방어를 제공하며, 실제로 USIM 칩을 교체하는 것과 동일한 수준의 보호를 제공한다고 설명했다.
회사는 4월 18일 고객의 USIM 데이터 대규모 유출의 징후가 있는 사이버 공격을 감지했다.
이에 따라, 모든 2,500만 명의 가입자에게, 예산 휴대폰 사용자 200만명을 포함하여 무료 USIM 교체를 제공하였고, 잠재적인 피해를 예방하고자 했다.
또한 통신사는 사용자들에게 USIM 보호 서비스에 등록할 것을 권장하고 있다.
보안을 강화하기 위해 SK텔레콤은 월요일부터 전국 2,600개의 소매점에서 신규 가입자를 일시적으로 중단할 예정이다.
