Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) appeared at a Seoul court on Tuesday for a hearing regarding a potential arrest linked to bribery allegations.
The five-term lawmaker arrived at the Seoul Central District Court following a request from special counsel Min Joong-ki for a warrant against him, citing violations of the Political Funds Act.
Kweon is accused of receiving 100 million won (approximately $72,000) in illegal political funds from a former Unification Church official in January 2022, ahead of the presidential election in March. He allegedly received a promise of votes from church members in exchange for supporting the church if Yoon, then a presidential candidate for the PPP, won the election.
Additionally, Kwon is accused of receiving cash in shopping bags from Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja between February and March 2022, as well as alerting the church regarding a police investigation into Han.
Upon his arrival at the court, Kweon criticized the special counsel, likening the investigation to a previous corruption case he faced during the administration of former liberal President Moon Jae-in, from which he was later acquitted. "I was innocent then, and I am innocent this time as well," he told reporters, declining to address specific allegations.
The court's decision regarding his potential arrest is expected to be made later the same day. This hearing follows the National Assembly's approval of a motion to arrest Kweon on Thursday.
According to legal provisions, sitting lawmakers have immunity from arrest while the parliament is in session and can only be arrested with the National Assembly's consent.
Min's team is investigating bribery allegations related to the Unification Church as part of a broader corruption inquiry into former first lady Kim Keon Hee, the wife of President Yoon.

그는 교회 신도들의 투표를 약속받고, 윤 후보가 당선될 경우 교회를 지원해 달라는 요청을 했다고 전해진다.
또한 권 의원은 2022년 2월과 3월 사이에 통일교 지도자 한학자에게 현금이 가득 찬 쇼핑백을 받았으며, 한씨에 대한 경찰 수사를 교회에 알린 혐의도 있다.
법원에 도착한 권 의원은 특별검사를 비난하며, 이번 수사를 과거 문재인 정부 시절의 부패 사건과 비교했다. 그는 그 사건으로 무죄 판결을 받았던 경험을 언급했다.
그는 기자들에게 “그때도 무죄였고 이번에도 무죄다”라고 말했지만, 구체적인 혐의에 대한 질문에는 답변하지 않았다.
그의 체포 여부에 대한 법원의 결정은 당일 늦게 내려질 예정이다.
국회는 목요일에 권 의원에 대한 체포동의안을 승인했다.
법률상 현직 의원은 국회가 소집되어 있는 동안 체포 면책권이 있으며, 국회의 동의 없이는 체포될 수 없다.
민 검사팀은 윤석열 대통령의 부인 김건희여사에 대한 부패 수사의 일환으로 통일교를 둘러싼 뇌물 혐의를 조사하고 있다.
