A Marine Corps sergeant died Saturday after being shot in the head at a unit on Daecheong Island, which is located approximately 30 kilometers west of Seoul, according to military officials.
The Marine was discovered bleeding from the forehead at his post and was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. before he could be transported to a hospital.
It remains unclear whether the sergeant shot himself or if the injury resulted from an accidental discharge. Authorities are also investigating whether the bullet involved was a live round or a blank.
The Marine Corps military police and Incheon police are collaborating on the investigation. One Marine official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to non-disclosure policies, confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
This incident follows a series of firearm-related occurrences within the military. Recently, an Army sergeant first class died by suicide with his rifle at a front-line guard post, and a captain at the Korea Army Academy also took his own life using a rifle.

상사가 자살했는지 또는 우발적인 방아쇠 사건에 의한 것인지 즉시 확인되지 않았다. 수사관들은 총알이 실탄인지 공포탄인지도 확인하고 있다.
해병대 관계자는 이름을 밝히지 않은 채 "해병대 군경찰과 인천 경찰이 함께 사건을 조사할 것"이라고 말했다.
이번 사망 사건은 군 내 총기 관련 사건의 연속 가운데 발생한 것이다. 8월 23일, 전방 경계초소에서 1급 상사가 자신의 소총으로 자살했으며, 9월 2일, 영천의 육군사관학교에서 대위가 소총을 이용해 자살한 사건도 있었다.
이번 사망 사건은 한국 군통신 부대의 상사가 포함되어 있다.
