An unprecedented heat wave in Korea has resulted in a significant increase in heat-related illnesses and fatalities among outdoor workers, leading to intensified calls for enhanced legal protections and stricter enforcement measures.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, there have been 1,228 reported cases of heat-related illness and eight suspected deaths nationwide from May 15 to Tuesday. Notably, 238 of these cases occurred on Tuesday alone, marking a 2.5-fold increase compared to the 486 cases reported during the same period last year. This trend highlights the escalating impact of the global climate crisis.
The rise in cases has been particularly severe since early July, when heat wave advisories were issued for much of the country. This situation poses an urgent threat to human life, especially for those most susceptible to extreme heat conditions.
In a tragic incident, a Vietnamese day laborer in his 20s died at a construction site in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, on Sunday, which was his first day of work. He was discovered unconscious with a body temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius. Additionally, two other fatal heatstroke cases have been reported in the province this year, including incidents on farms.

경북 구미의 한 건설 현장에서 20대 베트남 노동자가 첫 근무일에 사망한 사건이 발생했다. 그는 온도 40.2도에서 의식을 잃고 바닥에 앉아 있는 상태로 발견되었다. 올 해 이 지역에서 발생한 열사병 사망 사례는 이 외에도 두 건이 더 보고되었다.
