Kia reported a significant decline in second-quarter earnings due to increased expenditures related to a 25 percent tariff imposed by the United States, according to a regulatory filing released on Friday.
The company recorded an operating profit of 2.76 trillion won ($2 billion) from April to June, representing a 24.1 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. Despite the drop in earnings, Kia's sales rose by 6.5 percent, reaching 29.34 trillion won, driven by strong demand for eco-friendly vehicles.
The earnings decline was anticipated, as Hyundai Motor also announced a double-digit decrease in earnings the previous day, primarily attributed to the same tariff impact. Both Kia and Hyundai heavily depend on the U.S. market, which is their largest export destination.
Kia has indicated that global trade uncertainties are likely to continue affecting its earnings in the latter half of the year. This outlook is influenced by ongoing tariff negotiations between South Korea and the United States. Following the tariff's implementation on April 2, South Korea has engaged in multiple rounds of trade discussions with the U.S., but a consensus has not yet been reached.
