Korea's four major accounting firms — Samil PwC, Samjong KPMG, Deloitte Anjin, and EY Hanyoung — have reduced the number of promotions for certified accountant partners amid a downturn in the industry, according to government data released on Tuesday.
The firms are facing challenges with weaker profitability linked to the ongoing economic slowdown, with rising labor costs identified as a significant factor contributing to the decrease in promotions. Promotions for partners typically involve substantial pay raises, which have become less feasible under current conditions.
Despite the decline in promotions for certified accountants, there is an observable trend of companies promoting experts in non-accounting fields, such as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas. This indicates a strategic shift towards business diversification, as noted by industry officials.
Data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), provided to a member of the main opposition party, reveals that the four accounting firms promoted a total of 72 certified accountants to partner positions for the 2024 fiscal year. This represents a decrease of nine promotions, or 11.11 percent, from the previous year, following a period of steady increases in partner promotions.
