The ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) began reviewing an extra budget plan at parliamentary committees on Wednesday, but significant differences remained regarding a proposed cash handout scheme.
The extra budget proposal amounts to 20.2 trillion won ($14.7 billion) and is the second such proposal this year, as well as the first since President Lee Jae Myung took office earlier this month. The Cabinet approved the proposal last week.
Six standing committees, including the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee and the National Defense Committee, held plenary meetings to evaluate the proposed budget. The DPK advocates for including a cash handout scheme to stimulate private consumption, while the PPP opposes this, labeling it a populist policy.
The DPK aims to pass the extra budget bill by July 4, before the conclusion of the current special parliamentary session. DPK spokesperson Hwang Jung-a emphasized the importance of timely approval, stating, "We must not miss this 'golden time' when consumer sentiment is starting to recover."
