Honorary Chairman Shim Sang-don of the KATUSA Veterans Association (KVA) received a meritorious service award for his 18 years of dedication to strengthening ties among KATUSA veterans, promoting the KATUSA program, and enhancing the Korea-U.S. alliance. The award ceremony took place on Friday at the Grand Hyatt Seoul.
KATUSA, or the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army, is a distinctive military program that allows Korean soldiers to fulfill their mandatory military service by serving alongside U.S. Army troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula, a program that was initiated in August 1950.
Shim, who also holds the position of CEO of Starkey Korea, founded the KVA in 2007 and has served as both its inaugural and third president. His connection to the hearing aid industry began during his KATUSA service, where he first encountered a hearing aid. This experience prompted him to pursue a career in the industry after his discharge.
For the past 29 years, Shim has led Starkey Korea, the local branch of Starkey Hearing Technologies, which is the largest hearing aid company in the United States. His consulting role is set to conclude next month.

KATUSA(한국군과 미군의 연합군) 프로그램은 한국 병사가 한반도에 주둔하는 미군과 함께 복무하며 의무 군 복무를 이행하는 독특한 군사 프로그램이다. 이 프로그램은 1950년 8월에 시작되었다.
심은 또한 스타키 코리아의 CEO로 재직하고 있으며, 2007년에 KVA를 설립하고 초대 및 제3대 회장을 역임하였다. 그는 KATUSA 복무 중 처음으로 보청기를 접하면서 보청기 산업과 인연을 맺게 되었고, 제대 후 이 분야에 입문하였다.
그는 이후 29년간 미국 최대의 보청기 회사인 스타키 히어링 테크놀로지스의 국내 지사인 스타키 코리아를 이끌어왔다. 다음 달에는 그의 컨설팅 역할이 마무리될 예정이다.
